Diagnosing RAM Errors & Blue Screens
Random crashes, application freezes, and the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) are often caused by faulty RAM. This guide will help you test your memory modules for errors.
Common Symptoms of Bad RAM
- Frequent Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors with different codes (e.g., MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA).
- Files become corrupted unexpectedly, or zip archives fail to extract.
- Random restarts or freezes during resource-intensive tasks.
Step 1: Windows Memory Diagnostic
Windows has a built-in tool that is easy to use for a quick check.
- Press Windows Key + R, type
mdsched.exe, and press Enter. - Select "Restart now and check for problems".
- Your PC will restart and run a basic memory test. It will automatically boot back into Windows when finished.
Step 2: MemTest86 (Recommended)
For a thorough test, use MemTest86. It boots from a USB drive and tests every address of your RAM.
- Download MemTest86 Free from the official website and install it to a USB flash drive.
- Boot from the USB drive and let the test run for at least 1 full pass (preferably overnight).
- Any errors usually indicate faulty hardware.
Step 3: Reseating RAM
Sometimes dust or a loose connection causes errors.
- Power off your PC and unplug it.
- Open the case, release the clips holding the RAM sticks, and remove them.
- Clean the gold contacts with a soft eraser, then firmly reseat them until they click.
